Bible lesson

When your plans don’t work out, maybe that is God’s plan at work.

February 9, 2024

I’m a planner. I like knowing what I am supposed to be doing, where I need to be and what tasks need to be completed. I’ve secretly wished that I could be a little more spontaneous, but it doesn’t seem to be how I roll.

However, I have learned and sometimes the hard way that my plans are not always lined up with what God has planned. There has been times when I prayed and prayed for a certain outcome and felt those prayers fell on silent ears. Looking back now, I know that I just needed to trust God and His timing.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

Have you ever been driving on a highway and missed an exit? Maybe your heart started to beat a bit faster and you began to feel nervous not quite knowing where you were heading?

I’ve been there…even with google maps! There are times I miss a turn and even though the phone is trying to redirect me, I still get nervous and try to figure out where I am supposed to be going.

Life is like that at times. We have our well laid out plans and then bam something happens and things feel out of whack…but what if that is what God had planned all along?

Maybe the path you thought was the correct way ends up being the best obstacle you’ve ever taken?

Maybe the delay in your plans ends up being the break you never knew you needed?

So, yes I am learning each day to lean on God and let Him guide my path. I still like to be organized, but I am learning to not feel so tied to what I think my “plans” should be.

What does leaning on God look like:

It’s praying and giving ALL your thoughts to God.

It is reading scripture and trying to understand His Word as best you can then applying it to your daily life.

It’s trusting God’s timing. He alone knows the big picture.

It’s trusting His faithfulness and the fact that He does not waver.

Life is all about choices. We make hundreds of choices each and every day. Isn’t it comforting knowing that we can rely on God to have our best interest at heart even if we don’t quite understand His plan? We get to lean on the one who is all knowing and eternal. I don’t know about you, but that puts my mind at ease.

If you are like me and sometimes struggle with letting the control go try this prayer:

Dear Lord,

Help me to trust you. I confess that there are times I think I know “how things should be.” Instead help me to lean on you. Remind me that I can come to you, count on you and trust you with everything in my life. Lord, forgive me for holding on to control. Help me to release my grip on things and trust that you will clear the path before me. Refocus my heart and mind on you Lord.
Amen.
